if you’re here, it’s probably because you’ve been following natural hair problems on tumblr. as the site grew, i started getting a LOT of questions from folks following–everything from product suggestions & what i personally use, to advice on how to deal with a boyfriend who hates natural hair. i want to answer them, but don’t want to clutter the tumblr with a bunch of text posts, so i decided to make this quick blog to store them in.
so consider this an official introduction! hi!
i’m known to the internets as brokey mcpoverty. i started natural hair problems on a whim in the midst of an intense day of boredom and procrastination. i’m a writer. i write here & here, and here in February. i’ve been natural for three years & am still product obsessed and in search of a hairstyle that i can actually do.
i occasionally do product reviews, contests and giveaways at my main site; i also wrote one tutorial after getting lots of questions on twitter about the one hairstyle i can do, and will soon be selling t-shirts! like the NHP tumblr, i didn’t want hair stuff to take over my main site, so i’ll be putting those posts here from now on as well.
so if you’re new to the world of brokey mcpoverty, welcome! if you’re a hair-obsessed reader of the site who has found his/her way here, hey girl hey! come here for reviews, giveaways, answers to your questions, and that dry bantu knot-out tutorial vid that im (supposedly) gonna do. to kick things off, let’s start with a giveaway!
this is kalahari (watermelon) seed oil from Darcy’s Botanicals. it moisturizes hair + body. it smells like watermelon. what else do you need from a product?? read more about DB’s oil here, and get some info on the benefits of watermelon seed oil here. then when you’re done, come back & enter to win! all you have to do:
1. follow me on twitter and tweet/retweet the following message: “I just entered to win Darcy’s Botanicals’ Kalahari Seed Oil from @brokeymcpoverty! http://bit.ly/q8Moc9″ (my account is locked, but i’ll approve you!
2. like brokey mcpoverty on facebook, then find the post that says “Like this post to win a free bottle of Kalahari Seed Oil from Darcy’s Botanicals!” & like it
3. leave a comment on this post telling us what your favorite type of oil to use in your hair is. olive? tea tree? castor? share!
you don’t have to do all three, but you get one entry for each that you do (just one each though! multiple retweets won’t get you multiple entries!) winner will be picked at random at noon on Tuesday, August 16th.
hopefully this little blog will prove useful to some folks out there. good luck!
I use different products a lot but I will sometimes use tea tree oil if its time for a wash or I’ve come back from swimming/getting rained on or my old (it was my sisters at one point…) bottle of carrot and tea tree oil.
I would say olive oil because it is easiest for me to get and mixed with shea butter works well in my hair.
Heyyyyyyy…lol.. Love ur posts on tumblr & yup it led me to your blog. I have been laughing my butt off everyday when i see some of ur posts on tumblr because as a natural girl myself..it is sooooo true. Will be here as well. keep it up!
thank you! im very happy to have you here!
Oh..doubt that’ll i win anything.lol…i’m all the way in Trinidad ( Caribbean). i use coconut, castor, & olive oil all mixed into cocoa and Shea butter in my hair. The “fro” needs all moisture it can get!
Hi! I love melted shea butter which is essentially an oil; it was the first oil I ever used when I went natural and still gives me the most amazing, shiny, soft results. Only problem is that it’s a little stinky but I’ll live!
The tumblr is so entertaining. Can’t wait to hear more from the blog
P.S. I “liked” the facebook page
Your hair is fucking amazing. So are your blogs. that is all.
!
lol gee! thanks very much ms tam! u made my day!
Was just led to your tumblr site and found my way here. Funny stuff that I’m sure many of us have experienced!

I’m a coconut oil gal. I also occasionally use tea tree oil. Funny that I liked the NHP tumblr but had no idea it was you.
surprise! im all over the place! i need a nap!
I have tried castor, olive, grapeseed and good ol’ vegetable oil. I don’t notice a drastic difference, but olive oil is my favorite. Does the job and doesn’t smell crazy!
i remember the castor oil experiment.. i was really hoping it’d work for you! you knwo what tho, aside from that first time i tried it, i havent had those same phenomenal results since. im just using random oils now.
but that one time though… heaven.
I love coconut oil. When I get out the shower, I part my hair in 4 and use the oil with focus on my ends. I then take a heated wet towel (microwave) and wrap my hair till it cools off. I do this twice and OM Effin G! My hair feels so freaking soft and looks so pretty! I do this once a month. I also like Argan Oil on my ends after rocking my Curly ‘do. It doesn’t require a lot and it helps fight frizz.
ooh you’re the first person to mention argan oil. i have so many questions! what kind/brand do you use? is it expensive? does it smell good? what does argan oil do for you that you find other oils don’t? can you use it on your skin??
I LOVEEEEE Sandalwood Oil! It keeps my hair moisturized & the dryness to a minimum.
I’m just starting and I don’t have a specific oil that I used. I’ve used olive oil and I need to try more oils to see what works best for my hair. Any suggestions?
hi demitria! i’m not the best when it comes to oil suggestions.. my hair pretty much reacts to everything differently. my favorite oil is coconut oil, which i haven’t used in awhile just because i ran out of it and haven’t replaced it yet. other than that, my staple is usually olive oil.. if your hair is particularly dry, castor oil might be a big help–it’s thicker than any other oil ive ever tried. good luck in your search!
I have hair envy! Your hair is Fan-freakin-tastic! I use olive oil b/c it’s cheap and unscented. Sometimes I use coconut oil, but when I do white people at work always say “Ooh, You smell like suntan lotion!”. It gets them a little too excited, so I ration it out.
aw, thanks! yours is fab too!
lol @ white folk gettin excited abt suntan lotion
Get ready for me to ramble lol. Since I BC’d in April, I’ve used Shea oil. It’s really thick and heavy but I use just a few drops for my roots and then I do a couple sprays of Shea Moisture Reconstructive Elixir. The elixir is really light and love the smell. It has Shea oil, argan oil, sea kelp, avocado oil, macadamia nut oil, carrot oil, vitamin E and few more things. Completely all natural ingredients. I’ve never used kalahari seed oil and seeing how you mentioned it’s for hair and body and it smells good, I really want to now lol. I’ve been using nothing but Shea butter on my skin for a few months. Though it maintains the softness of my skin, the smell is starting to offend me lol. At first, it was all good but the more I smell it, the more it smells like….latex. Yep, latex. I didn’t realize it until recently. So even if I don’t win, I plan on trying it out. Thanks for giving me something new to add to my organic repertoire.
lol kelley i thought i was the only person who doesn’t like the smell of shea butter! the only ones i use are scented and whipped and mixed with a lot of other stuff. shame, because i like the way it moisturizes my skin.
the watermelon seed oil smells delicious. & yeah, even if you don’t like it in your hair, you can still use it on your skin & smell like a big ol tasty jolly rancher! maybe you’ll get bitten! hopefully by somebody u wont mind getting bitten by!
I use olive oil, melted raw shea butter, and mint/vanilla extract sometimes. I crush a vitamin E tablet and add that every now and then. I have never used watermelon seed oil and would LOVE to try it. I’ve been natural 3 years now and I am still exploring!
My favorite type of oil is Jamaican black castor oil. LOVE IT!!!
ooh ive been meaning to try this!!
S i am a brand new natural and my favorite oils have been castor oil and argan oil they keep my hair so soft and give it a beautiful shine. LOVE IT!
So i am a brand new natural and my favorite oils have been castor oil and argan oil they keep my hair so soft and give it a beautiful shine. LOVE IT!
I currently use a mix that includes both castor, jojoba and olive oils. This combo leaves keeps my hair moist and gives it a nice shine. occasionally I use tea tree oil on my scalp.
As of now my favorites are Jojoba, Olive and Castor oil. I’m still on the hunt for my holy grail. Some say this is futile but I believe that once you get to know your hair, you’ll know exactly what it needs and when it needs it. (This is my theory….lol) Right now I’m on the hunt for moisture. I realized I have a lot of protein based things and with my fine strands, protein overload can hit me and make my hair CRUNCHY pretty quickly and easily. I’d loooooooove to try the kalahari seed oil because I’m having a problem finding the RIGHT moisture balance no matter how much I *seal* with which oil. It will be soft for a few hours then POOF…dryness *sigh* I’m just a mess…but it’s a journey right? <3 I have plans to try Coconut for sealing my ends, Grapeseed, Avocado…I want to try everything I can get my hands on!
My fav oil to use is evoo and coconut oil so far. But I love to mix them with raw shea butter.
